South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is evaluating the potential reinstatement of General Fannie Masemola as the national police commissioner following the withdrawal of criminal charges against him. Despite the National Prosecuting Authority’s decision to drop the charges, a conclusion on Masemola’s suspension remains pending.
The charges, which involved alleged breaches of the Public Finance Management Act, were linked to a South African Police Service healthcare contract awarded to Medicare24 Tshwane District. The Pretoria magistrate’s court formally withdrew these charges after the National Prosecuting Authority determined there was insufficient evidence to pursue a successful prosecution against Masemola.
The authority’s review process included an examination of evidence collected by the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption, as well as input from a case assessment panel and independent legal counsel. Despite the withdrawal of charges, the decision does not automatically reinstate Masemola; President Ramaphosa must make a separate determination regarding his return to the role.
Masemola has expressed his readiness to resume his duties, should the suspension be lifted. Meanwhile, investigations into the Medicare24 contract continue, focusing on other individuals accused of corruption and irregularities in the tender process.
