Few investment announcements carry the symbolic and financial weight of Nvidia’s reported $30 billion commitment to OpenAI. Coming after the dramatic collapse of a previous $100 billion arrangement, the new deal reflects a more mature and credible form of investment — and could go down as one of the defining financial moves of the artificial intelligence era.
The story of the previous deal is worth understanding. When Nvidia announced a massive investment intent in OpenAI last autumn, markets responded enthusiastically, briefly lifting the company’s valuation above $5 trillion. But the investment was structured around chip purchases — Nvidia’s money would fund OpenAI’s hardware spending, effectively returning to Nvidia. Critics saw through the arrangement, and when it fell apart this month, the reaction underscored how much substance had been missing from the original commitment.
The new $30 billion investment is a different animal entirely. Nvidia pays for real equity in OpenAI, aligning itself financially with the company’s long-term performance rather than just its hardware decisions. There is no requirement for OpenAI to spend the investment on Nvidia products — a meaningful concession given that OpenAI is actively exploring chip alternatives through partnerships with AMD and Broadcom.
OpenAI’s next funding round is expected to reach a total of $100 billion, with Microsoft, Amazon, and SoftBank also participating. The resulting valuation of $730 billion is a figure that places OpenAI in truly elite company among private enterprises worldwide. That said, SoftBank — a key backer — has been notably noncommittal in public statements, with leadership indicating that no final decisions have been reached.
For all the optimism embedded in a $730 billion price tag, OpenAI’s business fundamentals warrant scrutiny. The company’s market share in AI chatbots has declined from 86.7% to 64.5% in a single year. Anthropic has overtaken it in enterprise software sales. Revenue experiments, including advertising, have attracted controversy. Nvidia’s investment may be a powerful signal of confidence, but OpenAI still has plenty of hard work ahead.
