In a recent international survey, South Africa has been recognized as the world’s second-best destination for wildlife holidays, underscoring its prominence as a prime spot for nature and safari tourism. This survey, which engaged 2,400 travelers from 12 different countries, revealed that a significant 72% of participants take wildlife experiences into account when deciding on their holiday destinations. This growing interest is further mirrored in the digital realm, where global searches for “wildlife holidays” have surged by 211% over the past year.
While Australia claimed the top spot in the rankings, South Africa followed closely in second place, surpassing well-known wildlife havens like Kenya, Canada, and China. The allure of South Africa lies in its varied ecosystems and abundant biodiversity, offering visitors a wide range of experiences. These include the iconic Big Five safaris, whale watching along its coastlines, birding adventures, and encounters with the charming African penguins.
The survey highlights a notable shift in travel trends, with a growing number of tourists opting for immersive nature experiences over the more conventional sightseeing activities. This preference for engaging with the natural world aligns with the rising interest in wildlife-centric vacations, as travelers seek deeper connections with the environment during their holidays.
On a global scale, the giant panda emerged as the most sought-after animal for travelers eager to observe wildlife in its natural habitat. Following closely were elephants, kangaroos, koalas, and whales. Notably, among Africa’s famed Big Five, only the elephant made it into the global top five, reflecting its enduring appeal and iconic status among wildlife enthusiasts worldwide.
