SARS Disburses R8 Billion in Tax Refunds, Boosting Economy as 2026 Begins

Must read

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has kicked off the 2026 Filing Season with a range of digital innovations aimed at streamlining the tax filing process and bolstering security measures for taxpayers. These initiatives, which began on 1 July 2026, have already seen SARS automatically assessing over 1.9 million taxpayers and disbursing around R8 billion in tax refunds within just the first 72 hours. The agency anticipates delivering more than six million automatic assessments throughout this tax season.

Among the new features are enhanced auto-assessments that leverage expanded third-party data to ensure greater accuracy. Taxpayers can now enjoy improved self-service options via the SARS eFiling system and the SARS MobiApp, which have been upgraded to include biometric verification and two-factor authentication. Additionally, SARS has incorporated AI-driven assistance, enabling more effective online support. A noteworthy addition is the ability for taxpayers to upload documents through WhatsApp and receive tax notices digitally, further enhancing the overall user experience.

SARS is encouraging those who are automatically assessed to utilize these digital platforms to review their assessments, thus reducing the need for visiting service centers in person. This shift towards digital services is part of SARS’s ongoing effort to make tax compliance more convenient and efficient for South Africans.

However, as digital services expand, SARS is also cautioning the public to remain vigilant against phishing scams and fraudulent refund schemes. The agency is reminding taxpayers that it does not request personal information such as passwords, one-time pins (OTPs), or banking details via email, SMS, phone calls, or social media platforms. This warning is part of SARS’s broader strategy to protect taxpayers from potential fraud and cyber threats.
